EKG TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATION

EKG technicians are health care employees who perform diagnostic tests that help doctors identify cardiovascular problems in patients. The tests can help discover any irregularities in the heart that may lead to a heart attack or heart disease. EKG technicians are responsible for performing electrocardiogram tests, including the application of various arrhythmia monitors and electrocardiographic stress testing. EKG technicians work in physicians’ offices, hospitals, clinics and other health care facilities and organizations. The EKG Technician program is a 120 clock hour program includes Externship requirements, preparing students to function as EKG technicians. This course will include anatomy and physiology of the heart, medical terminology as relative to EKG monitoring, medical ethic, legal aspects of patient contact, infection control, and electrocardiography. Students will learn proper use of EKG equipment, perform hands on and proper lead placement. The Hybrid EKG Technician Training Course is 8 weeks in length, with a three-day Externship at designated sites. The EKG Technician certification program is being delivered via the “traditional” and “hybrid” methodology. Theory/class sessions are conducted on site during scheduled times or via scheduled ZOOM class times; laboratory sessions are delivered on site at FSTE, and externship sessions are delivered in person at affiliating health facilities for both the traditional and hybrid methodology. As a Hybrid program portion of the courses are covered online via ZOOM, on specific course scheduled days with students completing at least 6-8 hours of assigned work online. Students are required to adhere to an asynchronous schedule that includes scheduled testing dates and times. Students must have a computer and have good computer skills and the ability to manage their time well, be strong independent learners and be accountable for course material deadlines. The Phlebotomy technician certification training program is also delivered in the traditional methodology. Classes are held per schedule on site at FSTE. Computer requirements and lab and clinical session requirements are valid for traditional methodology.
FSTE discloses the EKG Technician certification training curriculum meets educational requirements for certification. Upon completion of the program, the student will have acquired the knowledge and skills to sit for the National Health Careers certification (CET) exam. The successful candidate will be eligible to practice in any of the 50 states as a certified Phlebotomy technician. Students who successfully complete the Phlebotomy Technician certification program will receive a Certificate of Completion from FSTE.

 

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

 

  • ​17 years of age (parents acknowledgement is required for students 17 or younger)*

  • High school/GED (copies of high school/GED or transcripts submitted with application and enrollment agreement *High school students must submit current grade transcript)

  •  Reading Comprehension and Math (basic) placement exams – tests will be administered during the first week of the course. There is no fee for exams.

  •  Physical examination by a licensed physician (include COVID vaccine proof, TB screen, Immunization history) Clinical training involves lifting, direct contact with patients/residents and other activities which may cause harm or injury. Each student is responsible for acquiring and maintaining necessary insurance coverage throughout his/her enrollment in the program. Proof of coverage is to be presented to FSTE prior to start of program

  • Drug Screen (5 panel drug screen conducted) Required Criminal Background check - In compliance with Health Care Worker

  • Background Check Act. Applicants with disqualifying felony convictions are discouraged from continuing with the program until a Waiver from Illinois Department of Public Health is obtained.

  • State issued picture identification and social security card.

  • Complete and signed Enrollment Agreement and Student payment agreement for the registered course(s)

  • Student Payment Agreement must be signed before the 1st day of class. Payments are accepted by debit or credit card (service fee applied) ZELLE only and made in person at FSTE by money order once accepted.
